Liliputing got their hands on a demo unit of the ASUS Chromebox, which is currently on pre-order from Amazon with it launching on Friday. Liliputing tore open their Chromebox demo unit, and found out that the Chromebox can be upgraded up to 8GB of RAM, although it ships with 2GB or 4GB of RAM. You’d need two 4GB RAM sticks on the Chromebox to max it out.

Additionally, the ASUS Chromebox comes with a 16GB SSD which is swappable for a larger SSD. So you could probably opt for a 64GB or even a 128GB SSD inside. ASUS also states that you won’t void the warranty by opening the case.

Remember the ASUS Chromebox is only $179, so these specs are actually pretty good. Considering it’s basically a desktop running Chrome. It’ll be on sale starting this Friday, March 14th. It’s not the first Chromebox out there, but it’s the first one we’ve seen in a couple of years, which is nice to see them back, and nice to see ASUS jump on-board the Chrome OS wagon.

So we can upgrade a $179 Chromebox to 8GB of RAM and an even larger SSD. Which is definitely a great thing to be able to do. Liliputing does say that with the Chromebox you get the dock, so you can dock it on the back of your monitor, as well as a mouse and keyboard. Which aren’t going to be the best mouse and keyboard, but it’s better than nothing. Obviously there’s no monitor in the box, but you can get a nice monitor for under $200 which is also nice to see.

If you’re interested in pre-ordering the ASUS Chromebox, you can do so here. And check out Amazon for some new RAM sticks for the ASUS Chromebox as well. How many of you are tempted to pick up the ASUS Chromebox? Let us know in the comments below.
