The Amazon rumors about their streaming device keep coming and coming. It’s almost leaked as much as the HTC One 2014, okay maybe not that much. But we’ve been hearing for nearly a year that Amazon was looking at releasing their own streaming media device, similar to Chromecast – which is due to hit the UK and other regions beginning tomorrow. According to The Wall Street Journal, it appears that the long-rumored streaming media device will be hitting Amazon’s virtual shelves next month.
So what exactly are we looking for here? Well, we are looking at a device that will run a forked version of Android, similar to what the company does with their Kindle Fire lineup of tablets for the past few years. It will also have a variety of streaming apps. We’ve heard that Netflix and Hulu+ are already on board, and we are 100% sure that Amazon’s own Instant Video service will be available. As recently as yesterday, we heard that Amazon would stream games, kind of like how Google streams stuff with Chromecast. Using the cloud. Man do we have a love/hate relationship with the cloud.
What’s interesting here is that this may all be part of Prime, and why they raised the pricing of Amazon Prime to $99/year. Which wouldn’t be surprising, but we are just anxious to see what Amazon has up its sleeve. It’d be great if they did Prime Instant Video for games, right?
The Wall Street Journal has stated that the device will be available from Amazon as well as other retailers. More than likely all the retail stores that sell the Kindle and Kindle Fire will get this new product, including Best Buy, Staples and Walmart. We should also be seeing a pretty low price tag, since Amazon likes to sell their hardware at a loss. Hopefully we’ll learn more about this media streaming service real soon.
