MediaTek is showing off its MT6595 chipset at the China Electronic Infromation Expo, in all it’s integrated-LTE glory. We first hear about this chip back in February, but MediaTek is giving us some more details. The MT6595 is built on a big.LITTLE architecture and has integrated LTE support, making it easier than ever for manufacturers to bring high-speed LTE to us all. When the company first announced the MT6595 chipset, they didn’t provide us with much in the way of info about it, just that it was on it’s way to us. Now we know all about it after MediaTek showed it off in China last week.

The MT6595 is designed to compete with Qualcomm’s Snapddragon 800 and 805 chipsets. MediaTek is stepping their game up, bringing us a high-end chipset aimed at high-end LTE smartphones and tablets. It’s a “true octa-core” chip in that it’s capable of running all eight of its cores at the same time. It has four new Cortex-A17 cores clocked at 2.2 GHz, and four 1.7GHz A7 cores. Like we mentioned, it’s using ARM’s big.LITTLE architecture and should offer a performance boost of up to 60% over the older Cortex-A9. It boasts a PowerVR G6200 GPU and will support up to a 20-megapixel camera. The MT6595 will also offer 2K4K video recording and video playback, and supports H.265 video too. MediaTek is even claiming that its new MT6595 octa-core SoC will be faster and much more power efficient than Samsung’s current Exynos options. MediaTek is claiming that this is the first octa-core chipset that offers onboard LTE support with its TD-LTE/FDD-LTE/WCDMA/TD-SCDMA/GSM modem.

While MediaTek is stating that this chip can compete with the biggest and the best, they are also aiming at a different market. The MT6595 doesn’t have 64-bit support, only using 32-bit cores. The company wants to hang with the big dogs, but isn’t quite there yet. As the future moves to 64-bit computing, the MT6595 won’t be able to stay current. However, costs will be lower and this new SoC from MediaTek will offer high performance for a more affordable price.
