Google is said to have acquired Titan Aerospace, they are makers of high-altitude, solar powered drones. This is a pretty interesting move, especially since Facebook was looking to pick up Titan Aerospace, and it was looking like we were going to have the two companies competing for internet in the clouds. But it looks like Google beat Facebook to the acquisition. According to Google, Titan Aerospace, will be working with their Project Loon team. For those that are unaware, Project Loon is basically floating balloons that provide internet, and that’s free internet. So we’d essentially have internet everywhere. Which is a great idea, and it looks like Google is getting serious about it this time.
“Google said the Titan team will work closely with Google’s Project Loon, which is building large, high-altitude balloons that send Internet signals to areas of the world that are currently not online. Titan may also work with Makani, another early-stage Google project that is developing an airborne wind turbine that it hopes will generate energy more efficiently.
Titan says its drones will be able to collect real-time, high-resolution images of the earth, carry other atmospheric sensors and support voice and data services. That type of technology could also help other Google businesses, including its Maps division.”
Google hasn’t released any financial details on the deal just yet, but rest assured that this acquisition was not cheap. We’re likely to see Titan Aerospace integrate with other Google products and services as well. Like Google Maps, which is getting better and better. All the while still being the best Maps service around. Apple Maps can’t touch them – they may not even be able to find Google. We’re still awaiting official word from Google, but if WSJ is posting it than it’s most likely true.
