Apple yesterday debuted new Smart Battery Cases for the iPhone XS, XS Max, and XR, and review units are in the hands of members of the media.
Many iPhone X users have been wondering if the iPhone XS Smart Battery Case will work with the older model given that the two devices are nearly identical in design, but the answer is no.
iMore's Rene Ritchie tested the iPhone XS Smart Battery Case on an iPhone X and while the case physically fits on the iPhone X, it does not charge.
The speaker and microphone holes on the case do not line up on the iPhone X and when putting the case on the iPhone X, it gives a compatibility error.
As usual, Apple .com was/is correct.

iPhone XS Smart Battery Case DOES NOT WORK with iPhone X.
Camera fits but not tight, speaker/mic holes aren’t aligned, charging system throws up a compatibility error.
(Now I’m going to https://t.co/bkloMllutP to ask for an X version...) pic.twitter.com/gUHvY6vuoI
Unfortunately, that means iPhone X users are out of luck when it comes to the Smart Battery Case because Apple did not introduce an iPhone X version.
Apple's Smart Battery Cases for the iPhone XS, XS Max, (and presumably XR), feature 10.1Whr batteries that extend the life of each iPhone.
The Smart Battery Cases are priced at $129 and can be purchased from the Apple website.
