Earlier today when HTC announced the new HTC One M8 they also announced the developer and Google Play Editions would be available today. Well we know that the Google Play Edition is going to cost $699, but now the listing is up on the Google Play Store – however it’s still not available for purchase just yet. The Google Play Edition is exactly the same as the Sense version, except it’s running stock Android – will also get updates faster than the Sense version of the HTC One M8. It’s also contract free and unlocked. So you’re looking at basically a Nexus-like phone from HTC. Which is what a lot of us have been waiting for, for quite a while. You will still have Boomsound, the dual-cameras and all those goodies as well. However the camera will probably still be worse than the Sense version because the stock Android camera just plain sucks. Which is evident with the Nexus devices and anytime you put a stock Android ROM on another Android smartphone.
The Google Play Store link should be going live later today. And you’ll be able to through $700 at Google for the HTC One M8 Google Play Edition. It’s a great phone, but I’m not sure I’d want to pay $700 for this device, at least not right away. With that said, the HTC One Google Play Edition – last year’s version – has gotten a $100 discount and is on sale for $499. If anyone is interested in last year’s model.
Per usual, this Google Play Edition is only available in the US and will only work on AT&T and T-Mobile as well as their prepaid and MVNO carriers like Straight Talk. So if you’re outside the US, you’re out of luck, unfortunately.
