It seems like with all the events that we watch here at Android Headlines – since it is our job – we’ve been seeing more and more OEMs taking stabs at Samsung. But is that really all that surprising? Samsung is basically the Apple of Android OEMs. They have the largest market share, and a bigger marketing budget than most OEMs make in profit. HTC took a few stabs at Samsung during their event today when HTC America’s president Jason Mackenzie was on stage. He basically said that their company doesn’t produce cheap plastic phones with dimples and “software gimmicks”. Well one could argue that some of the features in Sense 5 and 6 are software gimmicks as well, but that’s beside the point right now.
HTC drew comparisons between themselves and Samsung a lot, in saying that they don’t have a huge marketing budget and won’t be spending as much as Samsung does on marketing the new HTC One M8. HTC instead will be emphasizing the build quality of the HTC One M8, and the camera. It’ll be interesting to see how HTC does with their marketing this year. They already have one ad out for the HTC One M8, but obviously it’s going to take more than that. We might see HTC bashing Samsung in their ads, which is basically what Samsung did to Apple a couple years ago (in 2011) and that’s what really started gaining them market share and in turn gaining Android market share.
I think some Samsung bashing commercials could be funny. After all I did think the “Samsunged” ads from Samsung were pretty funny. Even the latest one aimed at the iPad Air which came out a few weeks ago, showcasing the new Galaxy TabPRO 10.1. What does everyone think about HTC bashing Samsung at their event and possibly in their commercials? Let us know in the comments below.
