From recent studies, we know that the internet speeds here in the US aren’t the fastest, in fact they are some of the slowest in the world. While we have some of the highest wireless bills in the world. Masayoshi Son has stated that he is working to fix that, at least on Sprint. Re/Code interviewed the Sprint Chairman in Washington DC today where Son bashed the internet service that’s currently available here, and stated it was “horrible”. Basically saying it’s way too slow and way too costly. He also admitted that Sprint’s internet speeds are pretty bad as well, which is partially why they are #3 right now.
However, Son said he could fix that. As long as the Obama administration would allow Sprint to merge with #4 wireless carrier, T-Mobile. Son stated that with such a merger, it would allow the combined company to gain enough scale to install new technology nationally that he claimed would offer speeds up to 10x current levels in households. Now this isn’t the first time Son has said this. He recently was interviewed by Forbes, in which he also stated that he wants to bring the 700MBPS speeds available in Japan over to the US.
Son was in Washington this week, as part of a campaign to build support for this merger, which Son has stressed that nothing has been agreed to yet. His aim was to argue that by providing faster, cheaper service to homes and mobile devices, any merged entity wouldn’t only be competing with AT&T and Verizon, but also cable and landline companies like Comcast, Time Warner and others. Which Comcast is waiting on approval to buy Time Warner right now, and if that goes through it’d be like Verizon buying AT&T. It shouldn’t happen.
I’m sure I’m not the only one that would love to see 700MBPS networks here in the US, especially for less than what we are paying now. And if the FCC allows Sprint to buy T-Mobile, hopefully we see some changes really quick, as both networks are not the strongest, and have their disadvantages.
