HTC announced a pair of mid-range devices at Mobile World Congress last month. One of them was the Desire 816, which is actually a really nice looking smartphone and features BoomSound. We’re hearing today that in China in just three days, HTC has received nearly half a million pre-orders for the HTC Desire 816. Which is a low number for most OEMs, but for HTC that’s a great number. And at this rate, it’s probably passed the 500,000 mark by the time you read this post.
Due to the great response for the Desire 816 and its pre-orders, HTC’s shares went up over 3% yesterday alone. Which is great news for HTC. So maybe this is where HTC really needs to focus now, on the mid-range market? Because they make great devices, and obviously people are loving the HTC Desire 816.
The Desire 816 has a 5.5-inch 720p HD display, 13MP camera on the back with a LED flash, 5MP front-facing camera, 1.6GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processor, 1.5GB of RAM, 8GB of internal storage with a microSD card slot, 4G LTE, WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS, and dual-front facing speakers for BoomSound. It also has a 2600mAh battery inside, and it’s just 7.9mm thin and weighs just 165 grams. It should be expanding to other regions in April, and hopefully HTC will see the same response in other regions as they are seeing in China.
We don’t know what other regions we are going to see the HTC Desire 816 available in, but hopefully we’ll learn more very soon. I doubt that it’ll come to the US, except for maybe on prepaid carriers like Boost Mobile, Virgin, etc. Hopefully we’ll see it available unlocked in the US pretty soon. As it would make a great device for a lot of people that aren’t as big tech fans as most of us.
