The Samsung vs Apple trial just seems to get juicier and juicier everyday. Today, there’s a new document that Apple Insider has gotten their hands on that really shows us what Samsung was up to with their first Galaxy Tab. Way back in 2010, Samsung put out the Galaxy Tab which was essentially a flop. I mean it was basically Android 2.3 Gingerbread on a 7-inch and 10-inch display. Not all that amazing, when you think about it. The original Galaxy Tab was also the last one to have an AMOLED display. Since then we’ve only seen LCD displays on Samsung’s tablets.
According to this document, obtained by Apple Insider, it appears that Samsung knew the Galaxy Tab was a flop but they weren’t ready to admit defeat. The Galaxy Tab was the tablet that lead Apple to put out a full-on assault on Google’s mobile OS and Samsung. The South Korean manufacturer tried to show the analysts and the press that they had knocked it out of the park with the Galaxy Tab.
During Samsung’s earnings call in 2010, Samsung stated that they had shipped 2 million Galaxy Tabs. Now there’s a big distinction between shipped and sold. Which Samsung likes to say Shipped instead of sold. In 2011, another quarterly earnings call revealed that they had only sold 1 million Galaxy Tabs. Which was over a year since the Galaxy Tab was launched. Which seemed a bit more likely. While the Apple iPad had sold around 17.4 million units.
However, now when we look back at 2010, we can see that Samsung was bluffing but their tablet sales are doing just fine right now. Additionally, the tablet wasn’t as mainstreamed back in 2010 as it is in 2014. And even smartphones weren’t that mainstream in 2010, as they are now. So Samsung’s tablet division is doing fine, but it’s going to be interesting to see how this plays out in court over the next few weeks.
