Paranoid Android Adds Active Notifications Feature Called Peek In Newest Beta Version

via AndroidHeadlines.com |

PEEK - 03182014 PNG RELEASE TEXT

For all the ROM junkies out there, Paranoid Android is giving you another reason to abandon all other ROMs only to feel the sweet embrace of the newest PA4 beta. By this time you may already know about the tweaks they made to PIE to revamped it, but today they’re giving us a whole new feature never before seen in any PA ROM. It’s called Peek, and basically it’ll allow you to access active notifications right from your lock screen without having to unlock the device, basically getting a peek at what just came in. Pretty sweet right? It gets better. With Peek, Paranoid Android knows when you’re taking your phone out of your pocket, so it can wake the screen and show you a blip of notifications for you to access, just by tapping the corresponding icon. No having to unlock your display to reply to that incoming message from your parents, just tap the message icon that comes up through Peek and it opens right to messaging for you to respond.

Peek does this by listening for movement as soon as a notification comes in. So if you get an email and grab for your phone from off the coffee table, it’ll notice the movement and pop up the active notifications. You’ll have to pick up your device within 10 seconds to activate Peeks wakelock features, but that’s more than enough time for the average user. If you wait longer than 10 seconds, the wakelock turns off and Peek is disabled until a new notification comes in, re-enabling it. Not only is Peek useful, but PA has also made it power smart. Peeks battery saving features were definitely not forgotten. With the way that Peek works, battery life could become a problem, that is if the PA team didn’t think about that issue from the beginning.

For those that might be worried about battery and how this would affect it, Peek helps to save battery in a couple of different ways. To first understand the battery saving though, it’s important to know how Peek knows what it knows. Peek works by using the gyroscope and proximity sensors within your device. The key here is, that Peek turns off both sensors while the screen is on. As soon as you turn your screen off after use, it starts to poll from both sensors so it’ll know where the phone ends up. For example, if it detects that you set it down on a flat surface, it’ll disable the proximity sensor, but if it detects that you shove it in your pocket, it’ll disable the gyroscope sensor. So there is the first way that Peek helps you battery, sensors are disabled when the screen turns on, and then once you turn it off PA is already waiting to find out where you put your device so it can better serve in a more power efficient manner. The second way battery is helped is through the wakelock timeout which I talked about above. If you want to give Peek a test run and check out how cool it is, you can watch the video below thanks to the PA team, then you can hit the download link to get the latest beta version of PA 4 here.

WSJ: Amazon Launching their Media Streaming Device Next Month

via AndroidHeadlines.com |

The Amazon rumors about their streaming device keep coming and coming. It’s almost leaked as much as the HTC One 2014, okay maybe not that much. But we’ve been hearing for nearly a year that Amazon was looking at releasing their own streaming media device, similar to Chromecast – which is due to hit the UK and other regions beginning tomorrow. According to The Wall Street Journal, it appears that the long-rumored streaming media device will be hitting Amazon’s virtual shelves next month.

So what exactly are we looking for here? Well, we are looking at a device that will run a forked version of Android, similar to what the company does with their Kindle Fire lineup of tablets for the past few years. It will also have a variety of streaming apps. We’ve heard that Netflix and Hulu+ are already on board, and we are 100% sure that Amazon’s own Instant Video service will be available. As recently as yesterday, we heard that Amazon would stream games, kind of like how Google streams stuff with Chromecast. Using the cloud. Man do we have a love/hate relationship with the cloud.

What’s interesting here is that this may all be part of Prime, and why they raised the pricing of Amazon Prime to $99/year. Which wouldn’t be surprising, but we are just anxious to see what Amazon has up its sleeve. It’d be great if they did Prime Instant Video for games, right?

The Wall Street Journal has stated that the device will be available from Amazon as well as other retailers. More than likely all the retail stores that sell the Kindle and Kindle Fire will get this new product, including Best Buy, Staples and Walmart. We should also be seeing a pretty low price tag, since Amazon likes to sell their hardware at a loss. Hopefully we’ll learn more about this media streaming service real soon.

How many of you are interested in picking one up next month from Amazon? Let us know in the comments below.

Fossil Throws Their Name In The Hat For Upcoming Android Wear Smartwatches

via AndroidHeadlines.com |

The smartwatches just keep on coming this morning as it seems that anyone and everyone wants to be a part of the future of the Android wearable space, and rightfully so, because it’s about to start getting crazy. So far we have seen announcements from both LG and Motorola, with LG showing off their upcoming G Watch, and Motorola just announced their Moto 360 smartwatch not too long ago this morning. Now, popular fashion and watch brand Fossil has announced that they will be supporting the Android Wear movement and will be coming out with some smartwatches of their own that run off of the software. The Wearables SDK was just made public this morning, so while this slew of smartwatches was quite the surprise for many once you take a step back and think about it, it actually makes a lot of sense. Why not announce plans for new smartwatches directly after the software that will be powering them is made open and available? It just seems like the perfect time.

Other than the fact that Fossil is working with Google we don’t really know anything about what their plans are, but we do know that Fossil is just one of many manufacturers that will be dipping their toes in the water here. HTC, ASUS, LG, Motorola, Samsung, and even some of the processor OEMs like MediaTek, Intel, Qualcomm and others will be on board to help drive forward this movement. We’ve been saying that 2014 is going to be an exciting year for wearables for some time, and this just proves that to be an even more true statement then before.

With Fossil being well known for quality goods for a while, Android Smartwatches just became a lot more interesting. Fossil is also really well known for their quality leather goods, and not just watches, so it stands to reason that for the people out there that are big fans of the leather strap, Fossil could be entering into this market with some fine leather band smartwatches. Anyone who has ever been inside a Fossil store before knows the almost endless amount of choices and styles to their normal timepieces, so we can probably expect them to bring that same amount of choice to this particular venture. The whole Android Wear scene is just starting to ramp up, who’s excited?

Google Also Rolling out Design Guidelines for Android Wear

via AndroidHeadlines.com |

Screen Shot 2014-03-18 at 2.15.19 PM

Earlier today, Google announced Android Wear and released the SDK. We also heard from LG and Motorola about their Android Wear devices, the G Watch and Moto 360 respectively. Now we’re seeing that Google has also made some design guidelines for Android Wear. Which much like the Android design guidelines, it doesn’t mean developers are going to follow them, but we can at least hope, right?

Google states that Android Wear experiences are Contextually aware and smart, Glanceable, Zero/low interaction, and Helpful. Then there’s the Notification UI patterns. Android notifications already appear as cards in the main stream and form the core of the Android Wear experience. Here is where many of the main Android Design guidelines for notifications apply to Android Wear. Google wants developers to be respectful of users’ attention and aware of how unnecessary interruptions will reflect on your apps reputation.

On Android Wear, actions appear to the right of your notification which allows the user to act on your notification. There are up to three actions permitted. The most-used action should be placed first, which in an email/Gmail notification that would be a “Reply” action. Actions consist of an icon and a caption. Icons are PNG files and are 64×4 DP.

Images appear behind cards in the stream. Which provide context and additional glanceability. The image should support the core message of the notification. Developers need to remember that the card will partially cover the lower part of the image. images should be at least 320×320 pixels at hdpi. Google is also talking about pages, which are additional cards which can appear to the right of your main card in the stream. If your core message is longer than a short snippet, Google doesn’t want you to sacrifice glanceability by packing a lot of information into your primary notification. Instead, Google wants you to use pages to provide additional content.

Google also goes into Notification stacks and Voice replies. Which you can read up on all the design guidelines on the Android developer site. I’m pretty excited about Android Wear, what about the rest of you?An

Google Releases “Android Wear” SDK Developer Preview, Android Wearables Coming this Year

via AndroidHeadlines.com |

Screen Shot 2014-03-18 at 12.12.45 PM

As Sundar Pichai stated at SXSW less than 2 weeks ago, Google has released their Wearables SDK. They are dubbing this as “Android Wear” which sounds better than a smartwatch or activity band. In their blog post today, they also stated that they are working with a ton of partners to bring plenty of Android Wear powered wearables this year. And I wouldn’t be surprised to see one or two at Google I/O in June.

“Asus, HTC, LG, Motorola and Samsung; chip makers Broadcom, Imagination, Intel, Mediatek and Qualcomm; and fashion brands like the Fossil Group to bring you watches powered by Android Wear later this year.”

So it appears that just about every manufacturer who has been rumored to be making a wearable of some sort this year, is working with Google on their new Android Wear platform. Which is a great thing. It’s going to be interesting to see how everything works on this new platform and if it’s any better than the current smartwatches out there like the Sony Smartwatch 2, the Pebble, and the Gear 2/Gear 2 Neo.

If you’re a developer and are looking to get in on the developer preview, you can head on over to http://bit.ly/1ooVPco and download the SDK. This will also allow developers to bring their existing app notifications to watches that are already running Android Wear. So it sounds kinda like what Pebble has done. But it also means we are going to get a lot more apps on Android Wear a lot faster, now that there is an “official” platform. It also appears that Google has made it easy for developers to move their apps over to Android Wear which is a big deal, I think.

I’m definitely excited to see these wearables come to life. How about the rest of you? Be sure to let us know in the comments down below.

Spigen Spills the beans on HTC One 2014 Mid-April Release Date

via AndroidHeadlines.com |

Screen Shot 2014-03-18 at 9.55.29 AM

Lately, Spigen has become pretty popular for outing new devices and their release dates. We’ve seen them post cases for the Nexus 5, iPhone 5S, Galaxy Note 3 and a few others. Now it’s the HTC One 2014 turn. We already saw them post cases with the name of “The All New HTC One”, however now all the accessories for the HTC One 2014 are now showing as being in stock beginning mid-April. These accessories include screen protectors, cases and more.

Mid-April sounds about right for a launch of the HTC One 2014. Although it could launch before that as usually most cases aren’t actually available on launch day. Next week, HTC is announcing the HTC One 2014 to all of us, but we don’t know if they will have any surprises up their sleeves, hopefully they will since we know just about everything about the HTC One 2014 already thanks to numerous leaks.

As far as the accessories that Spigen has, they will have four different screen protectors starting at $9.99 for a three pack and ranging up to $39.99. They are taking pre-orders for these screen protectors and for their two cases. One case is on sale for $24.99 which is the Case Slim Armor, the other is the $14.99 Ultra Fit Capsule. Both are really nice cases, and as usual Spigen has done a great job creating these cases. According to Spigen, it appears that HTC is looking to release the HTC One 2014 within three weeks of announcing it, which would put it right around the Samsung Galaxy S5′s release date of April 11th.

We should learn more about the HTC One 2014 next week. We have been hoping that they’d announce the smartphone and say it’ll be available next week. Kind of like what Apple does. As that would be pretty amazing. Most OEMs make you wait a month or so. Or in Samsung’s case, about 6 weeks. Which by that point, some people may have forgotten about that phone. So we’ll learn more on March 25th.

Yet Another Swiftkey Beta Appears with Emoji’s – Adds Google+ And Evernote Personalization

via AndroidHeadlines.com |

timthumb

We’ve thought for quite a long time that Swiftkey is one of the best keyboards out there, and I still think it is. It’s a really great keyboard and nothing else really compares to it, in my opinion. I often times run the beta of Swiftkey, which right now their beta has emoji’s, and who doesn’t love them some emoji’s. It appears that this beta has been taking the Swiftkey team a lot longer than with other betas for Swiftkey Cloud and Swiftkey Flow. But it’s also important that they work out all the bugs, so I’m fine with them taking longer.

The new beta fixes a ton of bugs, and we mean a ton. You can check out the source link below for all the bug fixes. Swiftkey has also added two new personalization options. So now you can get more accurate predictions by allowing Swiftkey to learn from your Evernote and Google+ account. Swiftkey states that they added Evernote to their personalization list after the great response they got for their Swiftkey Note app for the iPhone and iPad. The team added Google+ as they finally realized that more and more power users – and those likely to be using this beta – are using Google+, including all of us here at Android Headlines.

As stated above, this release includes bug fixes as well as some changes to the Emoji UI. Which is always welcome. You can download the latest beta here.

If you are running the last beta before this one, you’ll be prompted to update it as that beta will be expiring soon. It’s free to try, so if you’ve been on the fence about picking up Swiftkey, it’s a great way to try the app out before buying it. But in my opinion, it’s totally worth the price. How many of you out there are using the Swiftkey beta?
