Google is Expanding in NYC, Looking for Space to House Another 3,000 Employees

via AndroidHeadlines.com |

Google already owns a couple of massive office buildings in New York City, but it looks like it’s not enough. According to a report from The Wall Street Journal, the tech giant is on the hunt for more space. Real estate executives who are “familiar with the hunt” state that Google is in talks with several landlords and is trying to lease as much as an additional 600,000 square feet of space in the Big Apple. The office space would be used for more than 3,000 employees to work from.

The physical growth from Google and other tech companies in NYC is indicative of the explosion that the entire technology sector has seen in the past decade. Many of the companies from California like Facebook, Twitter, and Yahoo are establishing footholds in New York and are looking for talented software engineers and other employees that prefer to live on the east coast of the United States.

Google already has over 750,000 square feet of space in the Chelsea neighborhood of New York City. This is split between two properties, including a huge building that the company purchased in 2010 for a whopping $1.9 billion. Google’s headquarters in Mountain View, California are much larger than any of its NYC offices, coming in at over 7.3 million square feet of total space. Some of that is leased, some of it is owned. The NYC offices are the Google’s second largest grouping of office space for its employees.

The tech sector can be volatile, and landlords in NYC have to adjust accordingly. The dot-com bubble in the later part of the 1990’s was a booming time for real estate, but when the bubble burst it left landlords with problems. So far, this tech boom is slower and seems more stable than the last one, but these things can be fickle.

Google is growing in more ways than one. We’ll see a slew of new and improved products from them at Google I/O at the end of June, and many more new products and services as the year progresses.

Android How To: Remove the Nano SIM and MicroSD Card on the HTC One (M8)

via AndroidHeadlines.com |

As we’ve stated in the past, our job here at Android Headlines is more than just bringing out the latest and greatest news and rumors relating to Android and even Google – to an extent. But it’s to educate our readers. Which is why we do a ton of How to’s on every flagship device that comes across our desk. Earlier today we did one on how to take a screenshot, which may seem easy, but we get a ton of questions in our inbox about that exact task.

Now we’re going to show you how to insert and remove the Nano SIM and MicroSD card on the HTC One (M8). It’s actually pretty easy, but we also haven’t had a device where you have a tray for the microSD card before. Usually you just pull the back off and stick it in. With the HTC One (M8), the left side has the Nano SIM card tray and the right has the MicroSD card tray. You’ll need to use the SIM card removal tool that HTC includes with the device. Just stick it in until the tray pops out and pull it out. It’s just that simple for both the Nano SIM card and the MicroSD card. Remember that the HTC One (M8) does work with a 128GB microSD card, which right now Sandisk is the only one that has a 128GB microSD card available. Man that’s a lot of storage.

You can check out the video down below for a more detailed how to. There’s only so much some words on a webpage can do, but a video can do so much more. If you have any questions – as usual – be sure to let us know in the comments below.

Android How To: Take a Screenshot on the HTC One (M8)

It may seem like a simple task to most of you, but remember we do have new people making their way into the smartphone world and the Android world everyday. So taking a screenshot isn’t as easy as you’d think for many people. Part of our job here at Android Headlines is not just to bring you the latest news and rumors, but to educate you on these devices. They all have a ton of features, whether you think they are gimmicks or not, our job is to show you how to use everything. Which is what a lot of these How to’s are for. This time we’re taking a look at how to take a screenshot on the HTC One (M8).

To take a screenshot on the HTC One (M8), it’s very simple. Hold down the Power and Volume Down buttons together for a few seconds until you see some animation on your screen (as seen in the video below). It’s literally just that simple. Once the screenshot has been taken, you can go ahead and share it from your notification drawer, or view it. To share it, just hit the share button and choose the place you want to share it and you’re all set.

Like I said, it’s not hard to take a screenshot, but some people may not know how to do it. In fact, there are some people still upgrading from Gingerbread phones, which screenshot functionality didn’t exist on those phones. If you have any questions about anything related to the HTC One (M8) be sure to let us know in the comments down below.

Bring Your Own Device to Verizon, and Get a Discount on your Monthly Bill

via AndroidHeadlines.com |

Verizon Logo Store 9

T-Mobile has unleashed a war on their competitors in the past year, and we’ve seen AT&T and Sprint come right back at Magenta with their plans. AT&T and Sprint have both offered discounts for those that are bringing their own device over to the network. Now the last carrier to do so is Verizon, and has announced today on a blog post that they will be offering a $10 discount on the monthly access fee for those that sign up for their “More Everything” data plan with 8GB of data or less. Making it $30 on top of the data plan with unlimited talk and text. While it’s not a huge discount, it’s still a discount, and that $10 adds up. Verizon’s new promo goes into effect April 17th. And yes, I did say promo. Verizon also stated that this will only happen for a limited time only.

Basically what this means is that you can buy a Galaxy S5 at full price – if you don’t want to extend your contract – and you’ll get $10 off your monthly bill. Which doesn’t really seem worth it. Let’s do some math real quick. The Galaxy S5 is going for $199 on contract. And if you keep the device for 2 years, that’s $240 off your bill over the course of two years. Which the $199 + 240 is only $439. Which means you paid over $200 more to buy the Galaxy S5 at full price. So Verizon is obviously going to be pushing you to buy devices from them on a contract as it means recurring profits for them.

It’s great to see Verizon beginning to step up to T-Mobile. Last week they stepped up to their Tablet plan, offering a gigabyte for free for the lifetime of that tablet. Which is arguably a better deal than what T-Mobile was offering, even though they were doing 1.2GB for the rest of the year. But we do know how much of a difference there is between T-Mobile and Verizon’s network. Verizon’s is much larger, faster and more reliable.

Samsung Trademarks Galaxy V:, Galaxy S Fitness and Galaxy Adore Names

via AndroidHeadlines.com |

Samsung-Galaxy-Tab-Pro-10.1-AH-Review (20)

Samsung has just filed for trademarks on three new names for – what we believe to be – future smartphones. There’s the Galaxy V:, Galaxy S fitness and Galaxy Adore. Obviously the Galaxy S Fitness is going to have something to do with fitness, and maybe even another fitness tracker. It could also have some heavy integration with the Gear Fit, as that is basically a fitness tracker. Now the Galaxy V:, and yes the colon is part of the name for some strange reason. We really have no idea what this could. My first thought was the Galaxy S5 in roman numerals, but then I realized they forgot the S. Perhaps this could be a new line of smartphones for Samsung? It would be interesting and entirely possible. As they like to make a ton of smartphones each year. Then there’s the Galaxy Adore, which is about as mysterious as the Galaxy V:. One thing’s for certain though, all three of these will run Android and not Tizen or Windows/Windows Phone. Because Samsung uses Galaxy for their Android line, Ativ for Windows and well Gear is basically for Tizen now.

It’s also important to note that these do not point to just smartphones. But the trademark applications point to portable computers, tablets, smartphones and more. And since Samsung makes everything under the sun, I wouldn’t put it past them. What if their next refrigerator was named the Galaxy Adore? That would be kinda cool, in my opinion. We’ve got a link down below to the USPTO, where Samsung has filed for these names, but there are no links to specific trademark applications.

So what does everyone think Samsung is up to with these new trademarks? Maybe some more tablets? Or some smartphones? It’ll be interesting to see. But what’s interesting, and needs pointing out, is that they will be coming to the US since they are filing trademarks with the US Patent and Trademark Office.
