Microsoft Outlook App Optimized for Split View on iPad

Microsoft today updated its Outlook app with full support for Split View on compatible iPad models, allowing users to multitask in a variety of ways, such as having an email and calendar open side by side.

Split View also enables users to drag and drop text, photos, and files from one app to another, such as dragging text from Safari into an Outlook email. To drag and drop text, select the text first, and touch and hold the text until it lifts up. To select multiple items, touch and hold an item, drag it slightly, and then continue to hold it while tapping additional items with another finger.

Outlook for iOS is a free download on the App Store for the iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch. Split View support comes in version 4.23.0.

Apple Patents Foldable Device With Movable Flaps to Prevent Display From Creasing

Apple this week has been granted a patent for a foldable device with a unique hinge mechanism that utilizes movable flaps to help prevent the display from being creased or damaged when folded.

Published by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office today, the patent explains that the hinge mechanism would ensure adequate separation between the first and second portions of the display. When the device is unfolded, movable flaps would extend to cover the gap, and then retract when the device is folded.

Early foldable smartphones like Samsung's Galaxy Fold and Huawei's Mate X have noticeable creases along the bending portion of the display. Motorola's new foldable Razr avoids this issue with a unique hinge design, but early reviews indicate the device makes creaking sounds when opened or closed.

All in all, it is still early days for foldable smartphones, with lots of room for innovation. Apple has certainly shown an interest in the category with several patents for foldable devices and mechanisms over the past few years, but it remains to be seen if the company ever releases a foldable iPhone or iPad.

Amazon and B&H Photo have new sales on the 21.5-inch and 27-inch iMac from Early 2019, discounting a few models by up to $200. The centerpiece of the sale is the 27-inch 5K model with a 3.0GHz Intel Core i5 processor, 8GB RAM and a 1TB Fusion Drive for $1,599.00, down from $1,799.00.

At $200 off, this is currently the best price for this model of the iMac available among the major Apple resellers online. You can also purchase the model on sale at B&H Photo, but the retailer does note that there is a limited supply of iMacs at this time.

While not as deeply discounted, there are a few other notable 2019 iMac sales happening this week. You can get the 21.5-inch 4K iMac (3.6GHz Quad-Core, 8GB RAM, 1TB Fusion Drive) for $1,199.99, down from $1,299.00 on Amazon. Additionally, the 21.5-inch 4K iMac (3.0GHz 6-Core, 8GB RAM, 1TB Fusion Drive) is on sale for $1,414.95, down from $1,499.00 on B&H Photo.

Apple updated the iMac lineup in March 2019 after a two-year wait, introducing 8th and 9th-generation Coffee Lake processors and upgraded Radeon Pro Vega graphics options for major performance improvements over 2017 models. Apple says the 21.5-inch iMac is up to 60 percent faster than the previous-generation model, while the 27-inch iMac is up to 2.4 times faster.
