There was a time where Apple and Samsung had the most appealing ads out there, which is why they were so popular and had such a huge market share. But according to a new report out of Ace Metrix, it appears that they both have fallen, and Amazon and LG have taken the top spots. What’s interesting though, is that LG went from #6 in 2012 to #2 in 2013. That’s a pretty big jump. While Samsung dropped from #3 to #4 and Apple dropped from #1 to #5, so they are just ahead of HTC – which I can’t remember that last time I saw a commercial from HTC. And judginh by the average score, there’s only 25 points between Amazon (#1) and Apple (#5).
It’s nice to see other OEMs starting to take marketing seriously. As that’s the big reason why Samsung and Apple are so huge, and I’ve been saying for a while that I’d like to see another OEM be as large as they are. Simply because I want to see more competition, especially in the Android space. And it looks like LG is going to be that competitor. They really stepped up in 2013. While we were hoping HTC would step up as well, they actually dropped from #5 to #6, so I don’t have high hopes for them in 2014.
Considering the budget that Samsung has for marketing their devices, it’s actually surprising to see them sitting at #4. They probably have the biggest marketing budget out of everyone, yes even Apple. They spent over $2 billion in 2013, compared to Amazon’s $147.8 million. Maybe we’ll see Samsung go back to the Samsunged ads. I actually really enjoyed those ads, and we recently saw Samsung go back to that theme with the Galaxy NotePRO 12.2 commercial.
Are any of you surprised at these results? With Amazon and LG taking the top spots? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
